Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the start of the next period. In a 28-day cycle, this falls on day 14. Ovulation timing varies with cycle length, but the luteal phase (after ovulation) is approximately a constant 14 days.

The fertile period lasts a total of 6 days: 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. Sperm can survive in the body for up to 5 days, while the egg remains viable for 12-24 hours after ovulation. The highest chance of conception is 1-2 days before ovulation.

During ovulation, cervical mucus becomes egg-white consistency, basal body temperature rises by 0.2-0.5 degrees, mild lower abdominal pain (mittelschmerz) may be felt, and sexual desire may increase. LH tests help determine ovulation more precisely.
