Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between KB, MB, and GB?

1 KB = 1024 Bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 TB = 1024 GB. Each unit is 1024 times the previous one. Some manufacturers use a factor of 1000, which is why disk sizes may appear different.

Why is 1024 used instead of 1000?

Computers use a binary system. Since 2 to the power of 10 is 1024, 1024 is used as the standard in data storage. The 1000-based system (SI) is denoted as kB, MB, GB.

Why does my disk show less free space than advertised?

Disk manufacturers calculate 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, while the operating system shows 1 GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes. Due to this difference, a 500 GB disk appears as approximately 465 GB on the computer.
